Banister house mirror of Milan

The classic banister house was composed of two bedroom apartments, One was the “living area”, used for cooking and eating, to read, discuss or washing clothes, while in the, the “sleeping area”, he was sleeping or making love.
In many of the original homes, there was no running water, and many of the activities were held in public, in the courtyard. The services were on the balcony and not inside the houses, the apartments were heated with coal. Then the space was a luxury and families 5, 6 the 7 people slept together in one room. Over the years, the arrival of new technologies, the transition from one private property around the building, to split the units and the transformation into condo with the increasing levels of income, brought changes to the houses themselves. In the '60s came the technology: families were buying washing machines, gas cookers, e, later, dishwasher. The sounds of washing machines and televisions mingled with traditional sounds of everyday life of its tenements: children's games, the talk of the people, the flow of water. During the economic boom, in Milan, the tenements took two roads: some were left to their fate and occupied mostly by immigrants; These deteriorated, until the immigrants left for homes more comfortable, both in the periphery and in the province, Then in the 80s, were occupied by new foreign immigrants. Other homes instead underwent a process of recovery and restructuring. Earned in privacy and security, and eventually sank common tasks.
These refurbished houses can now be seen throughout the city and many architects have become specialists in renovation of tenements. Despite these changes, the past is everywhere, if we know where to look, in the stories of the people but especially in the structure of the buildings. Milan is a rich, frightening and extraordinary series of layers, none of which has never been, indeed, wiped out altogether. It's a complicated schedule.
